Benziger Family Winery Rosé, Frank Johnson Vineyard 2025

Serious Sonoma Rosé, not a mere poolside pour or summer porch pounder to get you through the afternoon until you can move on to your “good stuff.” It is a single-vineyard, small-production effort that showcases quality biodynamically raised fruit the winemaker wisely allows to shine rather than imposing winery tricks.

The wine is sophisticated, structured, versatile, and beautifully balanced. Yes, you will pay maybe double what you pay for a respectable commodity rosé. That is the point. This is your opportunity to move up a shelf and experience how stunning and delightful rosé can be. Winemaker Lisa Amaroli allowed Goldridge soil, cool nights, and extended hang time to become a wine that is light without being thin, easygoing without being simple, and deserves a place at your table where it will blend into the mood of your gathering—pleasing and complementing rather than competing for immediate attention.

Benziger wines are made with grapes harvested from certified sustainable vineyards. The winery notes: “Our sustainable philosophy promotes natural vineyard management, restoration of the land and biodiversity on the estate. We believe these practices result in wines that reflect the authentic flavors, aromas and character of the vineyard.” That approach also makes for a beautiful wine operation. You can ride through the vineyards on a Biodynamic Tram Tour—well worth the effort from my personal experience—and the loveliness of the vineyard is reflected in this wine.

Mike Benziger and his wife, Mary, arrived in Northern California in 1973 to start their wine adventure. Mike and his father, Bruno, purchased the historic Wegener Ranch on Sonoma Mountain in 1980. Benziger Sonoma Mountain Estate transitioned from conventional farming to biodynamic in 1995 and was officially certified in 2000. In 2006, all Benziger wines were certified as sustainable, organic, or biodynamic. In 2015, Mike retired as winemaker and was replaced by Lisa Amaroli. Chris Benziger, Mike’s younger brother, is the winery’s brand ambassador and vice president.

The Benzigers sold their wine operation to The Wine Group, one of the world’s largest producers, in 2015. The Wine Group is best known for supermarket wines Almaden and Cupcake, but the Benziger winery wisely has been left alone to produce its eco-friendly wine and premier efforts such as this one. That is a nice trend among several giant wine groups—acquire a thriving winery doing well, then allow it to continue doing what it is doing well while providing the marketing and distribution clout needed for ongoing success.

Benziger Family Winery Rosé, Frank Johnson Vineyard 2025: Pale copper color; strawberry, watermelon, pink grapefruit, subtle floral elements on the nose and palate. 14% ABV

Dry; no tannin; bright, amiable acidity. Medium body; pleasant mouthfeel and an engaging finish. Grapes are 100% grenache noir from the Frank Johnson Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. Limited production of 519 cases, so only available through the winery at $38. Benziger also makes excellent mass–distributed wines, including a rosé, in the $16-20 range that do not match this but certainly will not disappoint in your glass.

Pairing—Works as aperitif or charcuterie element with tapenade, olives, marcona almonds, watermelon-and-feta skewers, prosciutto, mild salami. Shrimp cocktail, grilled shrimp, salmon, crab cakes, simple grilled white fish with herbs and lemon. Herb-roasted chicken, chicken paillard with lemon and capers; pork tenderloin, ham that is not too smoky. Tomato salads, grilled vegetables with herbs, ratatouille, Mediterranean plates with peppers, zucchini, eggplant. Cheese—Fresh goat cheese (chèvre) is classic; feta, burrata, fresh mozzarella, young manchego, nutty gruyère. Triple-cream brie or camembert. Avoid sharp cheddar, intense blue cheeses, pungent washed-rind cheeses.
