Dry; moderate tannins and acidity. Very mellow, juicy, ripe fruit-forward. Organic grapes from Los Chacayes appellation in the Uco Valley. The 2020 vintage was warm, but the winemakers controlled the alcohol. The certified organic vineyards have colluvial soils with angular stones. The grapes were hand-harvested and kept in cold storage for 24 hours. Destemmed, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel. Aged in stainless steel, no contact with wood to emphasize the malbec grapes. No sulfites added. 14% ABV

This is a new malbec from Susana Balbo, Argentina’s first female winemaker, featuring pesticide-free viticulture. Susana Balbo has pushed for innovation and sustainability since 1999. Her children, Ana and José, now play leadership roles in the operation. From the beginning, the family focused on higher-end wines.

The website notes: “Susana Balbo’s wines are different because Susana is different, her children are different and the whole team is different. We are a large family with a great passion for work and love for our homeland and community. Our practice’s sustainability is vital for our environment, since we are a small part of a much bigger universe, and so we act and behave. We are the indispensable part of a terroir, the watchful eyes of the mountain range. Our hands crafting, our commitment ruling. All of the members of our team work, in a daily basis, with a strong conviction and commitment to sustainability in its environmental, social and economic perspectives.”

BenMarco Sin Límites Malbec Orgánico, Valle de Uco, Argentina 2020 is clean and precise presentation of malbec fruit. This hits the malbec sweet spot—not assertive as cab, not as soft as merlot. Very fruity. No oak. No sulfur added even at bottling. Pair with roasted or grilled beef, not enough tannic bite to work with heavily marbled cuts; lamb; cured meats—salami, prosciutto; chicken. Cheese—asiago, muenster, gouda, brie, gorgonzola, camembert, cheddar.$19-29
